After food and (hopefully) me, Champion’s favorite thing seems to be nosing around the backs of nearby carriages. Nobody else really thinks that’s cool because of the potential for damage caused by horse chompers. Champ knows he isn’t supposed to do it because I constantly correct him, but he does it anyway, to spite me. It’s not like he does it all the time, but I’d say that in the span of a night he spends about 5 minutes playing this game with me. It is one of the zillions of ways he solicits attention and affection, when being completely adorable seems to have run it’s course. All I have to do is put a finger oon the underside of his halter and say “back, back, back” and he moves away and stops. Of course his gentle obedience solicits a pat and a couple of encouraging words because he has stopped poking around and then he knows he has won. He’ll do this 2 or 3 times in a row and then lay off it with a smug look. Here he is going in for the tire of an unsuspecting wheel. Notice the blur caused by his playing with it in photo 1 and then the deep satisfaction in his eye in the second one when I’ve let him at it for the time needed to take this snapshot.
